Family History Hound Has a Fresh New Look! 🐾
Celebrating 11 Years of Hound on the Hunt
Tomorrow marks a special milestone for me.
On April 7, Hound on the Hunt celebrates its 11th anniversary. Even more amazing to me is that the Family History Hound website itself has been around since 2011—which means this little corner of the genealogy world has been growing and evolving right alongside my own journey as a researcher, storyteller, and photo organizer.
So it felt like the perfect time to give the website a fresh new look.
Why a New Look Now?
When I first started Family History Hound, my goal was simple:
to share what I was learning as I explored my family history and solved the mysteries hiding in my tree.
Since then, something wonderful has happened.
Family History Hound has grown into much more than a website. It has become a place where I:
- Share genealogy research strategies
- Explore genetic genealogy and DNA discoveries
- Teach ways to organize and preserve photos
- Help people protect their digital legacy
- and encourage others to tell the stories behind their families
The new design reflects that growth. It brings everything together more clearly, and I hope this makes it easier to find resources, explore topics, and see how all these pieces connect.
Because family history isn’t just about collecting names and dates—it’s about preserving lives and stories.
From “Scary Boxes” to Searchable Stories
If you’ve been following along for a while, you know that one of the themes I talk about often is what I sometimes call the “scary box.”
Almost every family has one.
It’s the box (or closet… or basement shelf!) full of photos, papers, and memorabilia waiting for someone to take the first step toward organizing them.
Over the years, helping people move from overwhelmed to confident has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work. The updated site reflects that focus, too. You’ll see more resources about organizing photos, protecting genealogy research, and creating systems that actually last for the next generation.
Because preserving family history isn’t just about the past—it’s about the future.
Genealogy, DNA, and Photos All Belong Together
Another thing that has changed over the years is how connected these areas of family history have become.
Today we can:
- confirm relationships using DNA
- capture stories before they disappear
- Discover new relatives around the world, and, in the process, make new collaborations and perhaps even discover who those mystery photos are of.
- and organize everything in ways that make it searchable and shareable
Family History Hound has grown into a place where all of those pieces come together.
The new look reflects that broader mission.
A New Chapter: The Family History Hound Dog Park 🐕
One of the newest developments has been the creation of the Family History Hound Dog Park.
The Dog Park is a learning space where we work together—not alone—on the things that matter most to family historians:
- organizing photo collections
- Understanding DNA matches
- preserving genealogy research safely
- building systems that are manageable and sustainable
- and most importantly, staying encouraged along the way
Genealogy can sometimes feel like a solitary activity. It is my hope that The Dog Park changes that. It’s designed to be a place where people can learn step-by-step, ask questions, and make steady progress together.
If you haven’t explored it yet, this anniversary feels like a wonderful time to take a look.
